I am an experienced, in-home guitar teacher, who is full of patience and full of fun. I am especially good with beginners and those who are 'anxious to get to the next level.' There are many approaches one can take to learning the guitar. I like to teach a little of every approach, so that you, the student, can find your natural apptitude. I can teach you how to read music as well as teach you how to play by ear, and how to play by "inner ear" with your own musical compositions. I can also teach you musical material which is requested by you, the student. I will teach you quality guitar technique which will shave seasons/years off of your practicing: techniques and which will have you learning songs faster with a more assured confidence. Proper technique may then be applied to whatever particular musical styles/expressions of your discoveries and tastes. I have taught Calgarians, young and old, from seven to seventy, since 2007. Personally, I play a chord/melody finger style. This involves taking any particular song or piece of music and then being able to play the song with the 3 voices independent: bass, mid-range, and treble. I also enjoy playing with the mighty 'plectrum' a.k.a. flat-pick, aka pick for songs ranging from Neil Young's hey hey my my and his needle and the damage done to classical pieces by the masters (Bach, Beethoven) and even pieces like
The Clap by Yes (steve howe) can be played flat-picked, as well. I have studied jazz at U of C and classical and flamenco at MRU. Remeber, it's not so much that practice makes perfect, as much as, quality practice which makes quality music. Concern yourself with quality movement and textured tones and you will go further much faster along your musical career. Remember Winnie-the-Pooh and his statement about music and life. My goal won't be perfection or volume or speed, but instead, instilling in you, my student, the twin teachers of precision and persistence. For, if you practice bad technique, you mostly just get better at bad technique, which will carry you along, for a while, until the wall of frustration at not improving arrives enough times that you find yourself ready to re-double the re-doubling of your efforts, in an extra effort towards learning: the instrument. And then you'll realize the imperative exactitude required for the dance of the fingers on the finger-board. Inspired, I look forward to inspiring, each of my students, in each of our lessons. References and criminal background check available (serious inquiries only please). My rates are $37/hour (goes up a dollar ever Sept.) which usually translates to presently $18.50/week for a delivered in-your-home half-hour weekly lesson. References and criminal background checks available. Serious inquiries only please. Sorry to have to say that but my experience has been such that it somehow seems required. Also, if I may, while on the subject, at the risk of boring you, dear reader, and I am sure this won't apply to you, but: if you are the type of person who is going to be calling/texting or even likely to be calling/texting last minute, ( indeed, sometimes even as i am driving to the house), to suddenly cancel a previously confirmed lesson (barring emergencies, of course) I will have to be forced to simply charge you for that lesson, because others want that time slot. Happy practicing, happy playing, Charles Nelson. (403) 467-0004.
